The Verdi family can trace its viticultural origins back seven generations to the 18th century, when Antonio Verdi came from Parma to settle in the Oltrepò Pavese. The original farm was founded on wheat and corn production; mulberries were grown for the leaves, used for feeding silkworms; and, of course, grapevines were planted. Luigi, of the third generation of Verdis, was the first to transform the family’s grapes into wine. However, it was Bruno who, after World War II, was the first to bottle his wine at the estate. He put his own name on the label and Bruno Verdi wines were born.
Since 1985, after Bruno’s premature death, the company has been in the hands of Paolo, then just over twenty years old. He is supported by his mother Carla and his sister Monica and, later, by his wife Enrica.
Paolo, busy both in the vineyard and in the cellar, buys new land and replants part of the existing ones, trying to identify the most suitable vines to plant in each vineyard and reducing the yields. He thus lays the foundations for creating what are today the most prestigious crus of the company. A tireless perfectionist, Paolo also intervenes in the cellar: he experiments with different types of winemaking, changes the wooden barrels, recovers the old cement tanks. Over the years, he transforms the company into one of the most dynamic and significant realities of a vast and jagged territory such as Oltrepò Pavese. Recently, thanks to the restoration of an old barn, the new offices, the sales point and the tasting room were created.
